MLK and Tu B'Shvat Day of Service: Waterways Cleanup |
Celebrate MLK Day and Tu B'Shvat with the Anacostia River Keeper What: This year, MLK Day of Service and Learning coincides with the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shvat, or the “new year of the trees”. This holiday, established by the rabbis in ancient times, is celebrated by eating special fruits, planting and honoring trees, and in recent decades, with environmental activism and learning. We will be partnering with the Anacostia River Keeper to do a cleanup at Pope Branch Park. This is a large-scale community clean-up. We will join other volunteers to learn more about the Anacostia River and what we can do to protect it. We will provide trash bags, gloves, and directions on trash pick-up - you just have to come ready to work! Who: Although this event is open to volunteers of all ages we recommend it for children 12 and over because the trash will be at a dumping site and not all of it is safe to handle for younger children. When: Monday, January 17th 9:30 AM - 1:00PM Where: Pope Branch Park. Exact meeting location will be provided upon registration. Registration: Registration for this project is free but required. Please register for each individual member of your family so we have an accurate head count. Click on the Sign Me Up! button to proceed to registration. **Join us for a live musical celebration of Dr. King and MLK Day at the JCC on Sunday, January 16 with the Afro-Semitic Experience as part of our JxJ program - everyone who registers for this trash clean-up receives 50% off a ticket to the concert!** Questions?
