Israel’s most beloved poet invented herself from the ashes of World War I through her magical poetry. Yair Qedar’s film The Five Houses of Leah Goldberg is a cinematic fantasy which uses animation, after-effects and more to explore its enigmatic subject. Prior to the film screening, Annie Kantar will discuss Goldberg's life and work and read from With This Night, the first English translation of Goldberg’s final collection of poetry.

Annie Kantar is the recipient of an Academy of American Poets Prize and a Fulbright Scholarship. Her poems and translations have appeared in journals such as The American Literary Review, Barrow Street, and Tikkun. She lives in Jerusalem with her husband and three children.

Film: Israel, 2011, 50 Minutes, Color, Hebrew, English subtitles

Praise for With This Night:

"Annie Kantar’s versions of Leah Goldberg’s late poems bring into English Goldberg’s signature combination of resonant clarity and crystalline musicality, and the result is a marvelous translation of what is arguably Goldberg’s most powerful book. With This Night lets the English reader eavesdrop on modern Hebrew poetry in one of its finest hours.”
