While growing up in Tel Aviv, pianist Roy Assaf spent untold hours listening to his brother’s collection of jazz records, fascinated by the musicianship of the players and the exuberance of the music. The March 2012 release of his debut album Respect validates the worldwide reach and influence of the jazz art form as brought to the world by the great jazz masters. Roy's energetic, newly-formed trio boasts a fresh musical flavor that combines a Middle Eastern sensibility with Latin American melodies into a unique, one-of-a-kind jazz experience.
Roy Assaf is an Israeli jazz pianist who was named the ASCAP Foundation’s Young Jazz Composer in 2008. His other awards include the 31st Downbeat Student Award for Outstanding Performance, America-Israel Cultural Foundation Prize for Young Israeli Musicians and the 30th Downbeat Student Award for Best Jazz.
“Assaf’s keys recall the nimble breezy yet almost funky qualities of Herbie Hancock’s mid-‘60s Blue Note era.”—Jazz Inside Magazine
