Daily Wisdom: A Conversation with Ilana Kurshan (If All the Seas Were Ink)
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 7:30 PM-9:00 PM
At the age of 27, alone in Jerusalem in the wake of a painful divorce, Ilana Kurshan joined the world’s largest book club, learning daf yomi, Hebrew for “daily page" of the Talmud, a book of rabbinic teachings spanning 500 years. Her practice carried her through the next seven years, a new marriage, and the births of her three children. In If All the Seas Were Ink, Kurshan provides an accessible and personal take on the Talmud, shedding new light on its stories and providing a modern, inclusive take on its life lessons. Her memoir, which has garnered praise from Dara Horn ("a stunning, gorgeous memoir") and Avivah Zornberg ("an intimate and eloquent portrait of a young woman's passionate loves and fears"), will entertain and enlighten, and perhaps even inspire you to embark on daf yomi yourself!
Author Ilana Kurshan will be in conversation with Rabbi Lauren Holtzblatt (Adas Israel). Rabbi Holtzblatt was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary, and she currently oversees all adult education at Adas Israel, in addition to her many pastoral and service leadership duties. She co-created three nationally recognized projects now operating out of Adas Israel, and was recently listed on the Forward's Most Inspiring Rabbi's and was a 2016 Jewish Women International (JWI) Women to Watch honoree.
