WASHINGTON JEWISH LITERARY FESTIVAL MAYA BENTON: ROMAN VISHNIAC REDISCOVERED SUNDAY, MARCH 19: 10:30 AM-12:00 PM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH WASHINGTON HEBREW CONGREGATION
Drawn from the International Center of Photography’s impressive collection of work by Roman Vishniac (1897–1990), Maya Benton brings us her beautifully illustrated volume that offers an expansive look at the modernist photographer’s work. We will examine the recognized and previously unpublished photographs, including images of pre-Holocaust Jewish life in Eastern Europe, the Nazi rise to power, postwar Europe, displaced persons camps, Jewish life in the U.S. in the 1940s and 50s, and color photomicroscopy.
Maya Benton is a curator at the International Center of Photography in New York, where she established and oversees a major public archive of Roman Vishniac’s work.
