Schmekel is Brooklyn's only 100% transgender, 100% Jewish, schtick-rock sensation!
Their music offers a Bar-Mitzvah buffet of punk, klezmer, jazz, rock and polka influences, while their lyrics combine bawdy humor and critical awareness, encouraging audiences to laugh at dirty jokes while deconstructing systems of oppression. Schmekel has been featured in The New York Times, The Jewish Daily Forward, Time Out New York and Jewcy.
...and yeah, their name means what you think it means.
“The music itself merges traditional klezmer scales and rhythms with the aggressive energy of early gay punk bands like Pansy Division. If the musical satirist Tom Lehrer were to write a hard-core anthem about sex reassignment surgery, with a driving guitar lick, a “Hava Nagila” breakdown and a keyboard line lifted from Super Mario Brothers, it might approximate the Schmekel sound.” –The New York Times
