Washington DCJCC

O-LMD-jazzThe Jazz Baroness
11:00 am | Aaron & Cecile Goldman Theater

This documentary tells the true story of the enduring relationship between Jewish Baroness Pannonica Rothschild (“Nica”) and Jazz legend Thelonious Monk. Nica left her husband and five children to start a new life on the other side of the world in a post-World War II New York City buzzing with pre-Civil Rights tensions and the frenetic syncopation of bebop. Written and directed by Nica’s great-niece, the film features Helen Mirren as the voice of Pannonica with Sonny Rollins, TS Monk Junior, Quincy Jones, Lord Rothschild, Roy Haynes, Chico Hamilton and many others appearing as themselves.

USA, 2008, documentary, 83 minutes. Director: Hannah Rothschild
