Clean up the Anacostia River in Style with Living Classrooms and the Edlavitch DCJCC! Living Classrooms, which manages Kingman Island, engages children, youth, and adults through unique and interactive learning environments to build safer, stronger, and healthier communities for all.

What: Join us to clean up trash and debris from the river in a kayak. You’ll be assisted and guided by staff certified in paddling education and CPR/First Aid. Each session consists of a 20 minute safety talk, a 1-1.5 hour paddle, and a 20 minute trash sort. Participants must be prepared to attend the entire session.

In case of heavy rain this will be program cancelled.

Who: There is no age requirement, but children should be able to sit independently in their own seat while out on the water. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Each participant under 16 will need to be in a 2-person kayak with an adult.

When: Sunday, June 25, 2023. We are organizing 2 clean-up shifts for this date. Please note that you may only sign up for 1 shift.

Shift 1: 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Participants must arrive by 10:45 AM.

Shift 2: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. Participants must arrive by 12:45 PM.

Once each shift is full, we will open up a waitlist. We ask that you only sign up if you can commit to participating in the event and give ample notice in the case that you need to cancel.

Where: Kingman and Heritage Islands. Exact meeting location with map will be shared via email.

Registration: Registration is required for this free event. There are two "ticket types", one for each shift. You must reserve a ticket for each individual member of your party. We will not accept any walk-ups for this program.

Other Requirements: After registering, you will receive an email with information regarding a mandatory waiver of liability, suggested clothing, and other details to make the event a success.
