Presented in cooperation with the 14th NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival
The rich, but little-known, Jewish history of the northern Spanish town of Léon
is revealed through fascinating testimonies, lyrical historic recreations, contemporary interviews and beautiful Ladino music. The film uncovers ties between Jewish and Spanish culture that have survived to this day including the moving story of two women, descendents of the Maranos, who continue to practice Jewish rituals in their homes. The excavations at Puente del Castro and the findings--revealed for the first time in the film--point to a 10th century Jewish settlement on the site of today's city. The film also explores Agaden, the mystical spot among the Aquilianos mountains, where a group of Jews fleeing the Inquisition got lost on their way to Portugal. The Jews lived there for many years in isolation, finally becoming extinct...their story now a legend. Spain, 2008, video, documentary, 90 minutes, Spanish and Ladino with English subtitles. Directors: Jack and Margalit Matitiahu
Co-sponsored by the Embassy of Spain and the American Sephardi Federation
