FILM: The Unsinkable Molly Brown
Edlavitch DC JCC

Dir. Charles Walters
(128 min, United States, 1964)
English
Narrative

Meredith Willson’s second Broadway hit (the first and biggest was The Music Man) proved a lucrative vehicle for the equally unsinkable Debbie Reynolds. Based on a true story, the film casts Debbie as hoydenish Molly Brown, who wangles her way into Denver high society when she marries new millionaire Johnny Brown (Harve Presnell). Along the way, they learn the incontrovertible truth behind the old adage, “all the money in the world can’t buy happiness.”

The Unsinkable Molly Brown cast Debbie Reynolds in one of her most memorable roles, and earned her an Academy Award nomination (she lost to Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins).
