Do law and art mix?  Can you own a sound?  It depends on who you ask.  For over 30 years, innovative hip-hop performers having been re-using portions of previously recorded material in new and otherwise original composition.  But when record company lawyers got involved, everything changed.  Trace the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multi-billion-dollar industry.
