Have some laughs and see yourself in a whole new way.

Humorist, author and activist Tania Katan performs an excerpt from her award-winning memoir My One-Night Stand With Cancer, as she navigates absurd medical staff, disgruntled lovers, and the intricacies of being Jewish and LGBT in this story of survival.

A featured speaker on NPR, TEDx, Comedy Central Stage, and Literary Death Match, Tania will field a Q&A that covers dealing with identity issues surrounding health; being Jewish and having traditionally-Jewish genetic issues, including the BRCA-I gene; navigating the healthcare system as a member of the LGBT community, and how we maintain a sense of humor through it all.

The performance is followed by a low-key creative workshop open to everyone, of all experiences. Tania will give us tools to see our own DNA or cells as a creative map to explore personal stories, rather than seeing it as a predetermined code. Through lively discussion, fun exercises and sharing stories, we'll leave with a new way of seeing our genes and health - whatever they may hold - and how we can all creatively rewrite our own genetic code.

Tania Katan is an author, playwright, and comedic performer. Her memoir My One-Night Stand With Cancer has been awarded the Judy Grahn Nonfiction Award, the Stonewall Book Award, and was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award. As a comedic performer, Katan has cracked up more than a few people at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, ACT Seattle, The Painted Bride, Comedy Central Stage, and more. Her solo-show Saving Tania’s Privates made its New York debut at Frigid New York Festival in 2011 where it won Audience Choice Award for BEST SHOW and the Sold Out Run Award. Clients have included PBS, Planned Parenthood, the Human Rights Campaign, Art Intersection, and the American Cancer Society.
