As Israel turns 64, urgent questions trouble people who care about its future. What to do about the campuses? The UN? The Palestinians? The settlers? The ultra-Orthodox? The right, the left, the Iranian Bomb? When we talk about such issues, what kind of language do we use? How can we listen to the Other in these polarized times?
Stuart Schoffman, a Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, writes and lectures about Israeli and Jewish politics, culture, and history. He has served as editor of the Institute’s journal Havruta, and is a member of its Engaging Israel project. From 1990 to 2007, he was a columnist and book critic at the Jerusalem Report. His essays have appeared in the New York Jewish Week, Los Angeles Jewish Journal, Jewish Review of Books, and many other publications. His translations from Hebrew include books by the Israeli authors David Grossman, A.B. Yehoshua, and Meir Shalev.
Before making aliyah in 1988, he worked as a reporter for Fortune magazine, a staff writer for Time, and a Hollywood screenwriter. He taught film at the University of Southern California and Tel Aviv University. A native New Yorker, he holds degrees in history from Harvard and Yale.
