Lisa Moses Leff: The Archive Thief: The Man Who Salvaged French Jewish History in the Wake of the Holocaust

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 7:30 PM-9:00 PM

Author and historian Lisa Moses Leff vividly depicts the story of Zosa Szajkowski, a Polish journalist-turned-historian who, recognizing the impending threats against Jewish Europeans in the late 1930s, risked his life and freedom to transport tens of thousands of documents from Berlin and France to the US and Israel during and after the Second World War. Szajkowski’s story illuminates continuing debates over the rightful ownership of contested Jewish archives and reflects the ideological, economic, and psychological impulses that have compelled generations of Jewish scholars to work tirelessly to preserve the remnants of their cultural and personal histories.

The Bernard Wexler Fund for Jewish History supports an annual lecture that brings outstanding speakers, scholarly research and contemporary issues to the forefront of learning at the Edlavitch DCJCC.
