Queering the Mikveh:
Immersion for All

LOCATION: Edlavitch DCJCC (16th & Q)

This ain't your bubbe's mikveh. The mikveh (ritual immersion) has been reclaimed as a modern Jewish ritual (for all genders) as a site of dynamic radical inclusion - not in spite of tradition, but because of it.

Learn how this ritual immersion has expanded to include contemporary life events that signal a new start, commemorations, and commitments. Events like:

  • gender affirmation immersion, marking a meaningful transition moment (for example, when a trans person has declared their new name, or has begun using their new pronouns)
  • claiming the title of "survivor" after a period of hardship
  • pre-wedding immersion for people of all genders, whether in same-sex weddings or not
  • healing after community trauma

After the discussion (with plenty of guidance!), we'll consider lots of options and create new rituals centering around LGBTQ community life. You'll be given tools to put together your own language and ceremonies - from mix-and-match with ready made pieces, to space to write your own passages.

Join Rabbi Sarah Tasman, Director of InterfaithFamily/DC, and Halley Cohen, Director of GLOE, to explore all the old stereotypes, the "new rules" around reclaiming this powerful ritual, and the ways in which the mikveh can be a place of radical inclusion.
