THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER US, 1968, 35mm (presented in video), drama This absorbing and moving story centers around John Singer (Arkin in a “coded” Jewish role), a deaf mute who deeply touches many lives in a Southern mill town, especially the young girl Mick (Locke in her film debut). Arkin never speaks a word, yet was Oscar-nominated for this role. Adapted from Carson McCullers’ classic 1940 novel, the film is beautifully shot by the great cinematographer James Wong Howe. Free program presented in conjunction with the 2009 Big Read DC. Reservations are strongly encouraged.
