US, 1968, 35mm (presented in video), drama
124 minutes
Director:  Robert Ellis Miller
Cast: Alan Arkin, Sondra Locke, Laurinda Barrett, Stacy Keach, Cicely Tyson

This absorbing and moving story centers around John Singer (Arkin in a “coded” Jewish role), a deaf mute who deeply touches many lives in a Southern mill town, especially the young girl Mick (Locke in her film debut).  Arkin never speaks a word, yet was Oscar-nominated for this role. Adapted from Carson McCullers’ classic 1940 novel, the film is beautifully shot by the great cinematographer James Wong Howe.

Free program presented in conjunction with the 2009 Big Read DC.
