Join GLOE Youth & Family to celebrate the New Year with other LGBT individuals, couples, teens, kids and families!

We'll gather in Rock Creek Park for a casual afternoon of community, games and tashlich. Tashlich, which means "casting off" in Hebrew, is the High Holiday tradition of tossing bread crumbs into a flowing body of water, casting off the negatives of the past year and giving us a chance to reflect on our hopes for ourselves and families in the coming year.

Tashich parachuteIn addition to plenty of games, we're thrilled to have a new rabbi leading us in fun holiday-related activities. After the activity (for those who would like to participate), she'll lead us in casting our crumbs into Rock Creek, and together, we'll envision a sweet new year!

If you'd like, please bring a picnic lunch and blanket for yourself, and we’ll provide everything else, including (kosher) dessert and challah, games and lots of ruach/spirit!

Important Note on Directions
Our picnic site this year is the same as last year, - and is much easier to get to than years prior! This year we are centrally located, not far from one of the main intersections of the park.

Our site (#6 - Miller's Cabin) is on Beach Drive, one of the main roads through Rock Creek Park, just north of Military Road. Military Road is open, but note that some park streets are closed on weekends, so please check the map below if you have questions.

Plan to enter the park on Military Road. We are on Beach Drive, just north of Military Road.

Please review this map of the park (click here) when planning your arrival by car. We will be at site #6, towards the upper-right side of the map. Please note that closed roads are marked in yellow.

Click here for directions from the park's website.

The picnic site is Metro/public transportation-accessible! See wmata.com for exact directions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can come?
Anyone who wants to come! If you identify as part of a LGBT family, how ever you define it, you are welcome. That means couples, friend groups, and singles; LGBT parents with young children; any LGBT people without kids or with adult children; parents of LGBT young people or teens - anyone in the LGBT community who wants to connect with other families.

We also love all friends of GLOE (LGBT/Jewish or not!) and welcome you to come.

Aren't you supposed to do tashlich on Rosh Hashana?
While many people do tashilch on Rosh Hashana, actually, you can do it any time from the beginning of Rosh Hashana until Yom Kippur. The important thing is that we are reflective during this time period!

Do I have to be Jewish?
We welcome everyone to come and experience the beautiful tradition of tashlich. Our community's families are Jewish, interfaith and non-Jewish.

Isn't it a day of fast?
Yes, it is the Fast of Gedaliah, and we respect those who are observing the fast. As children do not fast, and many in our community do not fast today, we welcome those who would like to picnic to bring whatever food they'd like to enjoy. There will be plenty of other activities, so whichever you choose, it should be comfortable for everyone.

Can I bring _______?
Please feel free to bring games, pets (on a leash) and food for your family. Other FAQs about the Park can be found here.

Bathrooms?
Yes, bathrooms are located at our site, a short walk from our picnic area.

Parking?
Yes. There are lots of parking spots, but they are also shared with other park users. If ours fills up, additional parking is located a short walk away at the next site.

How do I get there?
For a map of Rock Creek Park, click here. We will be at site #6 - Miller's Cabin, seen on the upper-right side of the map. Please note that closed roads are marked in yellow. Plan to enter on Military Road.
