Jews & Gender:
A Class on Trans Issues, The Androgynos, and That Whole Gender Spectrum

Thursday, July 30, 2015
7:30-9:00 pm | DCJCC

genderbread personEverybody has a gender.
And the Torah’s got plenty of opinions about it.

Trans issues bring up some of the coolest parts of Jewish learning. For thousands of years, the Jewish tradition has been making space for all the in-between-ness… even if it seems like society has only recently caught up!

As we watch (hilarious) Jewish stories get told on TV in Transparent, and the country becomes increasingly aware of trans people’s lives (Laverne Cox, Caitlyn Jenner, Janet Mock), we’ll explore what Jewish texts have to say.

Rabbi Laurie Green (Bet Mishpachah) will take us through traditional and not-so-traditional Jewish sources and opinions related to trans, genderqueer, and non-binary individuals. From the Bible and the Talmud, to a minyan of openly trans ordained rabbis, we'll find that Jewish non-conformity is nothing new.

Come explore a new frontier in Jewish tradition!
No previous knowledge (of Torah, trans issues, etc.) required.
