Doctor, Lawyer, or Disappointment?

There was no way I could be a doctor. One time my friend Alyssa asked if I’d go with her to get her nose ring removed; I screamed louder than she did.

How do you rock your pride all year round?

I rock my pride year round by being myself. My family and friends are important to me and I love them for supporting whatever I do (like entering the Mr. NJB competition!). To my friends, the pride parade is a bigger deal than my birthday.

To us, Jewish pride means valuing family, being compassionate, living with love and respecting tradition. I come from a fairly conservative suburb of Chicago and was the first openly gay person many people in my high school knew. While this made coming out difficult, once I did people around me were supportive. Because many people did not think I was gay, I was able to set into motion the idea that there is not one single identity/stereotype that sexuality encompasses.

Brag a little:

I’m a really happy guy. I have a lot to be thankful for: an amazing family, good health, the best friends, a place to live and a job that challenges me. I love traveling and have been fortunate to go to a bunch of cool places. I host the Smithsonian’s podcast, Sidedoor, which allows me to talk to fascinating people across art, science, history and culture everyday.

Doctor, Lawyer, or Disappointment?

I’m planning to be a lawyer, but not the kind that makes money. I’d like to do civil rights law, election law and voting rights, environmental protection, or some related social justice related work.

How do you rock your pride all year round?

Well besides going to gay bars, spending too much time on Grindr, I go to shul often, and I consider that an act of Pride. I often wear my rainbow kippah, and when I daven, I bring my full queer self into the davening. I couldn’t do it any other way - you have to bring your whole self to prayer. I don’t really see any distinction between my judaism or my queerness - they are inextricable, one in the same.

What makes you a nice Jewish boy?

Just like my mother - I’m a strong guy on the outside who suffers no fools (and damn proud to say so) but a total marshmallow on the inside, or a lost puppy dog. I wear my emotions on my shirtsleeve. I’m very forward about what I’m thinking or feeling, to a fault. It sounds shmaltzy, but I think I am a really loving person, who approaches everyone from a place of curiosity and goodwill.

Doctor, Lawyer, or Disappointment?

Consultant – close enough, but always a disappointment regardless.

What was your last mitzvah and who'd you do it to. Was it double or a single?

A Chabadnik wrapped me in leather at the Kotel – I hope that’s what you were asking about.

What makes you a nice Jewish boy?

According to 23andme I am 28.1% Ashkenazi and according to 9/10 peers I “mean well”.

Brag a little:

In the eighth grade I wrote an award-winning poem about the Holocaust. I did not consent to enter the competition and had to read my poem at the award ceremony. That was my last experience with public speaking.

Doctor, Lawyer, or Disappointment?

Real Estate Private Equity Finance Jew… I’m a stereotype...

How do you rock your pride all year round?

With my attitude. I’m always the first to suggest Town and attend every NJB happy hour. That proves I’m proud, right? But actually, I try to lead by example – I dress how I want, talk how I want, wear what I want, dance how I want and do my very best to encourage others to do the same. It’s less about being proud than it is about being your true self, however you may identify.

How do you make a Jewish mother/mother in-law happy?

Well for starters, I’m gay. I had a bar-mitzvah. I feel like that covers it?

What makes you a nice Jewish boy?

I’m a long Island Jew who went to summer camp and occasionally partakes in Shabbat – what more is there?

Brag a little:

I was featured in JSwipe’s NYC most eligible gay Jewish men campaign in 2016 – you can’t find this through a google search though as it was for a direct marketing campaign via banner ads on Facebook. I’m a classically trained musician (Clarinet and Singing), minored in music in college and performed at Carnegie Hall several times.
